Description.

Laryngitis is defined as inflammation and swelling of the vocal cords. Swelling of the vocal cords leads to hoarseness, decreased voice, or even no voice at all. Other symptoms may include sore throat, dry throat and a dry cough.

Normally your vocal cords open and close smoothly, forming sounds through their movement and vibration. But in laryngitis, your vocal cords become inflamed or irritated. This swelling causes distortion of the sounds produced by air passing over them. As a result, your voice sounds hoarse. In some cases of laryngitis, your voice can become so faint as to be undetectable.

Causes.

Acute laryngitis can be caused by a virus, vocal strain or bacterial infection. Common causes of chronic laryngitis include inhalation of irritants, acid reflux (GERD), chronic sinusitis, excessive alcohol use, overuse of the voice, and smoking.
