Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid fails to produce enough T3 and T4 hormones, leading to low metabolism. Hypothyroidism may present with symptoms such as fatigue, sluggishness, constipation, high cholesterol, unexplained weight gain, and muscle weakness.

Hypothyroidism can be due to autoimmune disorders, over treatment for hyperthyroidism, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery, and some medications. Lowered thyroid function can also be caused by congenital disease, pituitary disorder, pregnancy, and iodine deficiency

Advanced hypothyroidism can lead to myxedema which can be life threatening. Symptoms of myxedema include low blood pressure, decreased breathing, decreased body temperature, unresponsiveness, and even coma.
