Epilepsy is a nervous system disorder that generates electrical signals in the brain characterized by mild episodic loss of normal brain function leading to loss of attention or sleepiness (petit mal), or severe seizures with loss of consciousness (grand mal). Epilepsy is a condition where nerve cells in one area of the brain, or in multiple areas of the brain, signal abnormally to each other. In a normal brain, signaling between nerve cells is required for communication and is used to carry out all processes in the body, such as movement. When nerve cells abnormally fire, they can cause a seizure. While one seizure can occur under certain conditions in anybody, epilepsy is a condition where somebody has multiple seizures. These individuals will require medication and other means to control their seizures.
Epilepsy can be linked to genetic influences, head trauma, medical disorders, prenatal injury, and developmental disorders.
