Description.

Dysentery refers to inflammation of the intestines, which may be characterized by severe abdominal pain and frequent intense diarrhea with blood and mucus—along with nausea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal cramping.

Causes.

Dysentery is usually caused by a bacterial, parasitic or protozoan infection.

Complications.

Chronic diarrhea (lasting more than four weeks) can be an indication of a more serious condition such as inflammatory bowel disease or a less serious condition such as irritable bowel syndrome. The patient should seek immediate medical care if nausea and vomiting are accompanied by any of the following: severe headache pain; signs of dehydration (excessive thirst, dry mouth, infrequent urination, dark urine, weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness upon standing); and vomit that contains blood, resembles coffee grounds or is green.
